Dental Infection Control Awareness Month

The Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP)
has designated September Dental Infection Control
Awareness Month as part of a collaborative,
profession-facing effort to support dental practitioners and
help them communicate to patients the critical role infection
control in dentistry plays in preventing the spread of disease.

Dental Infection Control Awareness Month provides a proactive way for practitioners
to educate patients about what they are doing (often behind the scenes)
to protect them. Clinicians do not usually bring it up, and
patients may be too shy to ask, so NDICAM provides a
neutral conversation starter for showcasing infection control
and safety practices.

Patient Talking Points

To help your team, OSAP has developed a series of Q&A talking points or
"scripts" that offer questions your patients may want to ask (and answers!).
Click HERE for the first script.

OSAP Members can access all seven scripts (general infection control,
flu vaccine, antibiotic resistance, handwashing, instrument sterilization,
surface disinfection, and what's trending in the news on infection control)

Online and Social Media Tools

Use OSAP’s Safest Dental Visit™ educational program as an opportunity to engage
patients on the topic of safe delivery of oral healthcare. Look for opportunities to
offer tips, provide information, promote your practice, or respond to concerns in
short, timely posts. Where appropriate, use the hashtags #SafestDV and
#NDICAM. Other useful hashtags include your location (e.g. #CentervilleOH),
#dentist, #dentistry, #dental, and #oralhygiene. You may also want to include
links to your own website or to patient-friendly content on the OSAP website.

  • Did you know that everyone in our office is regularly trained on infection control? The plastic-type wrap you see over our equipment and chairs is just one example of what we do to protect you. We’d also be happy to show you how our sterilization center works. We’re serious about safety.
