Medical devices are finally marked with unique IDs. Only a few hospitals can use them.

A supply chain software program feeds data about medical devices into Intermountain's electronic health record system. The software uses the Food and Drug Administration's new unique device identifier system, which was created to make it easier to hunt down devices wherever they are in the supply chain—or inside patients—in case something goes wrong with them.
