TITLE    Dental Unit Waterlines - What's New and Noteworthy?




This presentation will provide an update on the problem of dental unit waterline contamination.    The complexity of the issue and current approaches to its control to protect dental workers and patients from aerosolized, inhaled, and ingested microorganisms will be explained.  The role of federal and professional agencies in the regulation and guidance of antimicrobial systems and products, and the limitations associated with current approaches will be described.  Methods used to monitor microbial contamination and its importance will be presented, and a commercially-available chairside testing kit will be demonstrated.
