Infection Prevention and Safety

State oral health programs have a shared responsibility for the safe delivery of oral health care. ASTDD is partnering with the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP) to link states to technical assistance, educational materials, information on policy development and other resources on infection prevention and safety.

In The News - Fall 2017

September is Dental Infection Control Awareness Month, a great time to review (or develop) your written infection control plan. OSAP has resources available to support Infection Control Coordinators with implementing dental infection control strategies.
 
Influenza season is here, and the CDC has issued 2017-2018 Influenza Vaccination Recommendations. 

Hurricane Season Public Health Preparedness, Response, and Recovery Guidance for Health Care Providers, Response and Recovery Workers, and Affected Communities — CDC, 2017 has been published in the MMWR.

Facilities impacted by the season’s hurricanes may find Remediation and Infection Control Considerations for Reopening Healthcare Facilities Closed Due to Extensive Water and Wind Damage and the corresponding checklist to be of assistance in the recovery process.

CDC has launched a campaign to help states fight the prescription opioid epidemic.  

The CDC Infection Prevention Checklist is now available in Spanish.

An evaluation of dental antibiotic prescribing practices in the United States has been published online ahead of print in JADA.

A new report from the United Nations Foundation and the Wellcome Trust highlights the progress that has been made, and the work that remains to be done, in the year since world leaders agreed to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The AAP has issued Infectious Diseases Associated With Organized Sports and Outbreak Control.

Other safety issues include ergonomics, eye protection, use of visible light cure units, noise control, handling of dental mercury, ventilation, nitrous oxide, radiation from dental x-rays, etc.
