FAQ - Personal Protective Equipment - 2015
 FAQ - Personal Protective Equipment - 2015

Is there a specific protocol/recommendation for the use of PPE when unloading of the sterilizers? Our sterilizers are located within the sterilization area. We see in OSHA/AAMI that it is for the employer to assess the situation for safety of the employee. i.e. potential for burns, pokes.

Yes, OSHA does require that a workplace hazard assessment be conducted in order to determine what PPE is required. Further information can be found at this link:

Regarding instrument processing, Infection Control and Management of Hazardous Materials for the Dental Team states in part:

Put on heavy utility gloves, protective eyewear, mask and clothing.

Rationale: These barriers provide personal protection from contaminants on the instruments and from chemicals used. 2

It should also be noted that all related equipment should be used according to manufacturer’s instructions for use, and that the manufacturer may also specify the use of specific PPE. It is recommended that you contact the manufacturer of the sterilizer for any further relevant information on its operation.
