 FAQ - Practice Safety/Patient Safety - 2015

I was wondering with the dental eyewash stations being maintained, should I run water through them monthly or bimonthly?

The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has released a publication pertaining to health effects due to contaminated water in eyewash stations which can be accessed at this link:

https://www.osha.gov/Publications/OSHA3818.pdf

As this publication states:

Eyewash station manufacturer instructions provide direction on how often and how long to activate specific plumbed systems to reduce microbial contamination and generally reference the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard Z358.1-2014. Self-contained eyewash units must be maintained and employers should consult the manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance procedures. This includes flushing the system and using only solutions appropriate for flushing eyes.1

In summary, manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFU) should include procedures for eyewash maintenance. It is recommended that you consult with the eyewash manufacturer’s product manual, or if you have further questions to contact the manufacturer directly, for further information on eyewash maintenance.
