Launch of the First Global Patient Safety Challenge
"Clean Care is Safer Care"
On Saturday, 29 September 2007, Ministers of Health from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) were in Washington D.C. for a meeting immediately prior to the 27th Pan American Sanitary Conference, invited to sign a statement pledging to take action on health care-associated infection in their countries. Fourteen Ministers of Health or senior delegates from Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago signed a Statement pledging their support to the "Clean Care is Safer Care" initiative. Anguilla, a British territory, also signed.
The signing ceremony was done in the presence of the Director of the Pan American Health Organization and Regional Director of WHO in the Americas, Dr. Mirta Roses Periago and Sir Liam Donaldson, Chair of the World Alliance for Patient Safety (WAPS) and Chief Medical Officer of England.
