Required qualifications:

BA/BS degree in the field of study Biological and Chemical Science, or equivalent, with at least 6 years of work experience in Health and Safety
Demonstrated/documented effective communication and interpersonal skills including public speaking and ability to train in differing environments. 
Preferred qualifications:

Master's degree in the field of study Biological and Chemical Sciences, or equivalent,  with at least 4 years of work experience in Health and Safety or Doctoral degree in Biological and Chemical Sciences with at least 2 years of work experience in Health and Safety, or a combination of related education and work experience to equal ten years. 
Professional certification or licensure in the Field of Study Biological or Chemical Sciences
Management experience in the field of Health and Safety, preferably in an academic and or Healthcare system.

About the Job

General Responsibilities

Ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, MERTKA, CDC, FDA and other University, State and Federal rules, regulations and policies.
Identifying areas of health and safety risk and developing means to mitigate potential risks.
Reviewing publications and announcements from various regulatory agencies, such as CDC, EPA, FDA, MERTKA and OSHA, for revisions to rules and regulations.
Review, analyze and revise the Exposure Control plan and other policies as needed.  Identifying areas requiring new policies.  Drafting and implementing new polices as needed. 
Review, analyze and revise School of Dentistry emergency plans as necessary.  These plans include, but are not limited to: Tornado, Fire, Building Evacuation and Medical Emergency. Overseeing the Chemical Hazardous Waste Program and reviewing and revising operating procedures.
Ensuring that the packing, transport, treatment and/ or disposal of hazardous materials are compliant State and Federal rules and regulations. 
Modifies practices and procedures to improve efficiency and quality; searches for better ways to effectively achieve end results.

Education & Training

Coordinating and providing education regarding health, safety, infection prevention and liability exposure to students, residents, faculty and staff.  Topics of education include, but are not limited to: OSHA and BBP safe practices.
Notifying individuals when clinical requirements, such as trainings, certifications and/or immunizations, are nearing expiration and assisting with corrective action when clinical requirements are noncompliant. 
Performing practice drills to ensure students, residents, faculty and staff understand and remain familiar with emergency plans.  Analyzing the effectiveness of the drill and identifying possible areas of improvement.
Liaison with external regulatory agencies (OSHA, CODA, Minnesota Board of Dentistry etc.) as well as community organizations and other individuals regarding Health and Safety at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.

Database Maintenance

Maintaining training and certification records as required by OSHA and other regulatory agencies.
Maintaining the MSDS/SDS database.
Work with Boynton Health Services (and/or others) to maintain/monitor immunization and other health requirements (TB testing, etc.) database for students, faculty and staff.

Clinic Support

Ongoing inspection and monitoring of clinic areas for potential safety and infection control violations.
Monitoring of products, medications and instruments.  This includes tracking expiration dates and controlled substances logs.
Responding to urgent health and safety incidents.
Assisting with, and responding to, onsite inspections.
Evaluating and recommending dental equipment and consumable products.
Analyzing and tracking incident reports and performing RCAs in conjunction with the Associate Quality & Compliance Officer.
Reviewing waste disposal practices and answering questions related to waste disposal practices.

UNIVERSITY OF IOWA                  

University of Iowa, College of Dentistry is searching for a full-time Clinical Care/Specialized Services Supervisor.  Management responsiblility for the College of Dentistry Instrument Sterilization and Management System, including monitoring decontamination, assembly, sterilization, health and safety testing, inventory, storage and distributions of all dental instruments and supplies used in patient care at five core dental care delivery centers:  the College of Dentistry, Center for Disabilities and Development, Muscatine Clinics, Hawkeye Oral Surgery, as well as collegiate outreach programs.  This position is responsible for monitoring water delivery system to meet EPA standards. This position has responsibility for administrative supervision of 16 technical staff and student hourly employees servicing 19 dental and specialty clinics, 276 clinical operatories and 14 surgical suites.



  • Master’s degree in a relevant health science or equivalent field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • 3 - 5 years of relevant experience, to include the following skillsets:
    • at least 3 years administrative supervisory experience;
    • significant experience with dental or medical Instrument processing; and
    • Sterilization, unit management, etc.


  • Experience with OSHA standards and CDC guidelines.
  • Certification/Membership in IAHCCSMM (International Association of Health Care Central Service Materials Management)
  • Membership in OSAP (Organization of Safety and Asepsis Procedures)
  • Experience with management and disposal of hazardous chemicals
  • Experience with EPA water standards in a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge and experience with N2O testing in a healthcare setting.
