 FAQ - Sterilization - Archived Through 2012

Does repeated autoclaving compromise instrument sharpness?

According to infection control experts, dulling of instruments in an autoclave is minimal. Newer tabletop pre-vacuum autoclaves cause less dulling/corrosion than the gravity fed, and stainless-steel instruments are less susceptible than carbon steel.

If the cutting edges of your hygiene instruments seem to dull quickly, contact the instrument manufacturer and the manufacturer of the sterilizer for advice and assistance.
