HIGH TECH EQUIPMENT: PRACTICE SAVIOR OR MICROBIAL PARADISE?

DESCRIPTIONHigh-tech devices provide improved care and make life easier for both the patient and healthcare provider. However, without understanding how to manage infection control protocols around these devices, reprocessing may be doing more harm than good. High-tech equipment may require different and/or new materials and special handling considerations that can create challenges for the practitioner to ensure the equipment is both safe for reuse and won't harm the equipment.

To make high-tech equipment more manageable, proper identification of the items as well as recommendations, challenges and possible solutions will be addressed.

    SPEAKER(S)Peter Jung

LEARNING OBJECTIVESAt the completion of this presentation, the listener should be able to:

    1. Understand general considerations when evaluating the infection control aspects of new equipment/device purchases
    2. Understand the role high-tech device manufacturers play in a) providing infection control recommendations b) evaluating products and protocols used on their devices
    3. Know where, why, when and how different disinfection, high-level disinfection, and sterilization techniques should be used with high-tech equipment
