|A NEW PREVENTION TECHNIQUE - PERFORMING RAPID HIV SCREENING|
||Dental workers are often the first to recognize symptoms consistent with HIV disease and typically refer patients out to learn their status. However, the referring dental provider cannot be confident that the patient would obtain the test. Considering that advancements in the medical management of HIV disease transformed this once certain death sentence into a chronic condition, it is time for a new dental public health strategy that incorporates the latest scientific advances including rapid oral fluid-based diagnostics.|
After attending this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Understand the rationale to include HIV screening as a part of routine dental care.
- Become familiar with patient attitudes regarding HIV screening as part of routine dental care.
- Be familiar with how the oral diagnostic HIV test functions.
- Be familiar with the challenges and opportunities to incorporate HIV screening into dental education curricula.
