Infection Prevention and Safety

State oral health programs have a shared responsibility for the safe delivery of oral health care. ASTDD is partnering with the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP) to link states to technical assistance, educational materials, information on policy development and other resources on infection prevention and safety.

The reporting of more novel coronavirus infections, raising the total to seven, prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) on November 28 to issue Interim surveillance recommendations for human infection with novel coronavirus. Click here for further information.


 The ADA has announced its support for the American Public Health Association's (APHA) recent policy statement affirming that dental amalgam is safe and effective in treating dental cavities. Click here to access the ADA Press Release.


A study published in the October 2012 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) examined dental office compliance with infection control guidelines from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The findings were that implementation was neither complete nor uniform across all practices.


The whooping cough (pertussis) vaccine is urged for pregnant women by CDC's Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP).


In a report released by the California Endowment, de Beaumont Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and W.K. Kellogg Foundation, an IOM committee outlines a new, recommended framework for assessing the value of public health programs.
