The opioid crisis has raised awareness regarding opioid overprescription and abuse. This systematic review and meta-analysis of 47 clinical trials enrolling over 6600 patients who underwent various medical procedures ranging from 30 minor elective procedures (over half were dental procedures) to 17 moderate orthopedic and general surgery procedures, compared pain control outcomes and complications between opioid-dependent and opioid-free analgesia.
