OSAP 2014 Symposium - Recent Advances in Environmental Asepsis

OSAP 2014 Symposium: Moving forward to a safer tomorrow in dentistry

TITLE  Recent Advances in Environmental Asepsis

DESCRIPTIONThere is a growing body of evidence that the environment plays a role in the transmission of health care-associated infections (HAIs). As a consequence, more attention should be focused on environmental cleaning and ways of improving the efficacy of the cleaning process to decrease the spread of HAIs in health care settings, including dental practices.

This lecture will update the audience on the evidence surrounding environmental disinfection, including information available in the AORN Environmental Cleaning Toolkit. Additionally, this presentation will address new innovations in surface disinfection and environmental hygiene evaluation tools including adenosine triphosphate (ATP) meters and black light detection equipment.

SPEAKER(S)Heather Hohenberger BSN, RN, CIC, CNOR

After attending this program, participants should be able to:
  • List several recent studies addressing the role that surfaces play in the transmission of healthcare-associated infections
  • Identify trends in environmental asepsis in the hospital environment that are relevant to the dental profession
  • Describe new technologies that can be used to routinely evaluate the quality of environmental hygiene
