   Speaker Bio

I am well positioned to be the co-PI for the proposed R01, “Influential Factors in Community Water Fluoridation Decision-Making.” My faculty track is in Teaching and Educational Leadership with supporting activities in Research and Service to the Community. The proposed R01 corresponds to my background in public health, and my approach to addressing health inequities through education, both of the current dental workforce as well as communities. My research focuses on knowledge transfer through innovative curriculum development and pedagogy, and corresponding evaluation, as well as digital information dissemination for community education. I have received formal education training through Harvard Medical School Academy in Medical Education and Harvard Global Health Institute (HGHI) fellowships. Due to my education focus, in 2014, I developed an awareness of the growing problem of online misinformation (named a threat to society by the World Economic Forum in 2017), particularly around evidence-based public health interventions such as vaccines and fluoridation. My research expanded from the classroom to the community, where I began a research initiative studying the intersection of social and online media, network science, and public health communication. This led to a fellowship with Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, where I attended regular training seminars, including a network science class in the computer science department. I am now public health research collaborator with MIT’s Media Cloud project, an innovative open access platform for studying online media ecosystems. Bridging the gap between two distinct fields (public health and network/computer science) through the common link of education and information dissemination was considered ‘groundbreaking’ by early reviewers of our methods. I am developing a unique understanding of interactions between the two fields, and this research has since resulted in 42 oral presentations at the local, national, and international level, five poster presentations, five peer-reviewed publications, and 18 articles for community level education. As such, I am well-prepared for this R01 and its specific focus on fluoridation.
