The Dr. James J. Crawford Award is named in honor of one of the founding fathers of dental infection control. Awardees have made major contributions in science, education, or public policy related to OSAP’s core competencies of infection control and patient and provider safety.

Ms. Karen Gregory has more than 20 years’ experience working in the outpatient environment, both at the front line delivering patient care and in the management arena. Being passionate about both employee and patient safety, she takes every possible opportunity to improve the quality of healthcare for all involved. She joined Total Medical Compliance in 2006 as Director of Compliance and Education where she is responsible for the development and supervision of compliance programs within the organization.

Therese Long, MBA, CAE

The Dr. Milton Schaefer Award recognizes nominees whose efforts have resulted in tangible benefits to the continuing advancement of OSAP’s mission to be the world’s leading advocate for the safe and infection-free delivery of oral healthcare. This award, named after one of the founding members of OSAP, recognizes superior service to the organization and may recognize either continuous contributions over a period of time or singular accomplishments. The nominee's efforts should have resulted in tangible benefits to the continuing advancement of OSAP's mission to be Dentistry's Resource for Infection Control and Safety. Nominees may be either HCPs or corporate members.


Therese Long, MBA, CAE

Dr. Milton E. Schaefer Award

Ms. Long retired in 2017 from the Organization for Safety, Asepsis, and Prevention (OSAP) after 22 years as its first full-time executive director. Before joining OSAP, Ms. Long worked for Johnson & Johnson Medical and on a US Senate campaign. She served the growing community of OSAP members with passion and a deep commitment to its vision. She launched the OSAP Foundation and obtained IRS recognition for both it and the Association, introduced publications including Infection Control in Practice, InfoBites and OSAP’s Guide to the CDC Guidelines, conceived innovative programs including the “I See IC Video” and “Contagion” compliance contests, introduced the Dr. John S. Zapp Memorial Lecture, and embraced public-private partnerships to expand the organization’s recognition, reach and impact. She now works in a consulting capacity with the organization. Ms. Long received her BA in Communications with a minor in Business from St. Louis University. She earned an MBA with an emphasis in Marketing from The University of Texas at Arlington. She also earned the credential of Certified Association Executive (CAE) from the American Society of Association Executives. She was recognized as one of the Top 25 Women in Dentistry by Dental Products Report in 2014, was granted OSAP’s Dr. James Crawford Award in 2015, and received special citations for advancing dental safety by OSAP Chairmen of the Board in 2017 and 2019. An avid reader, gardener, and traveler, Ms. Long hiked the Camino Francés to complete the Camino de Santiago in 2019 earning the official Compostela.

Dr. John S. Zapp Memorial Lecture

In an effort to honor and preserve Dr. Zapp’s memory, the Friends of OSAP, a committed group of leaders who seek to integrate OSAP initiatives into broader global health platforms, established the Dr. John S. Zapp Memorial Lecture. The lecture is intended to build bridges with global leaders to promote knowledge exchange about oral infection and safety both for patients and providers of care.

Dr. McCarthy is the New York Times bestselling author of three books: Superbugs, The Real Doctor Will See You Shortly, and Odd Man Out. He is an assistant professor of medicine at Weill Cornell and a staff physician at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, where he serves on the Ethics Committee. He is a technical advisor for the television show The Resident on Fox, and his writing has appeared in The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, and The New England Journal of Medicine. His newest book, Superbugs, has been published in 14 countries and translated into six languages.

In 2015, OSAP introduced a new award: Emerging Infection Control Leader. The goal for the award is to help develop and promote the next generation of stars in the field of dental infection prevention and safety by identifying outstanding new infection control advocates.

LCDR Ellis serves as the U.S./DHHS- Indian Health Service (IHS) Infection Prevention and Control
Coordinator, assigned to the IHS HQs Office of Quality. LCDR Ellis served as the Portland Area
Institutional Environmental Health Officer Health, from 2010 to 2018, as the sole provider of infection control and environment of patient care support to 43 federally recognized Tribes in the region. LCDR Ellis is Co-Lead and an architect of the regional healthcare accreditation readiness team and served collaterally as the Public Health Emergency Management Coordinator. He has provided Agency-wide support on infection control issues and led multiple infection prevention training initiatives across the IHS. LCDR Ellis is CBIC Board Certified in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC), a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS), and an authorized OSHA General Industry Trainer. LCDR Ellis in a United States Army infantry veteran and has completed healthcare infection control and safety position tenures with a private healthcare consulting firm, University of Kentucky Medical Center, and the Veteran’s Healthcare Administration.

Bette and Paul Schwarz Award for Volunteerism

This award, named in honor of the Schwarz's for their innumerable contributions of time and service to the OSAP Conference, recognizes volunteers who go over-and-above in helping the organization achieve its goals through their volunteer service.

Ms. Bednarsh is Director of the Ryan White Dental Program, Boston Public Health Commission. She is Vice President of HIVDENT. She formerly served as a consultant to the Evaluation Center for the HRSA/HAB SPNS Oral Health Initiative from 2006-2012. Ms. Bednarsh was honored with the Outstanding Dental Hygiene Alumni Award from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1998. She received the ADHA Alfred C. Fones Award, recognizing outstanding achievement and dedication to the profession of dental hygiene in 2005. Her accomplishments were again recognized
with the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 2007. She
is also a Dimensions Editorial Advisory Board member.
