LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT

Shannon Mills, DDS

Shannon Mills, DDS

Recipient of the 2018
Dr. James J. Crawford Award

Dr. Mills has made numerous unique contributions to OSAP and to dental infection control. Pioneering dental unit waterline research, his 1986 JADA article and subsequent biofilm research at the USAF Dental Investigation Service made history in protocol design and waterline maintenance awareness. His recent achievements in International Standards include the adoption of a US protocol for dental waterline bacteria and biofilm elimination testing, ISO 16954, and an OSAP White Paper on dental unit waterline disinfection and maintenance related to patient safety. Dr Mills was also a pioneer in dental infection control education, organizing and executing the first dental infection control course in the United States Air Force. This course became our modern-day OSAP Boot Camp which has broken attendance records the last three years with almost 500 trained in 2018.
Dr. Mills is a world-renowned authority in dental unit waterline disinfection and clinical water safety for dentistry. He has lectured for OSAP both at Boot Camp and the Annual Conference and around the world promoting infection control compliance and safety related to all aspects of dentistry. His History of Infection Control lecture is one of the most entertaining and informative lectures on the evolution of the concepts that are taken for granted today including handwashing, personal protective attire, epidemiology, and standard precautions, covering over a thousand years of history in about 90 minutes.
Dr. Mills is a previous Board Member and served as its Chairman in 2001-02 and has influenced the vision of the organization driving toward compliance and education for all infection control coordinators. Dr. Mills has been a vocal supporter of infection control since dental school and a humble statesman for OSAP since very early in the organization’s history.

Dr. Milton E. Schaefer Award

Ms. Helene Bednarsh has been an ardent and long-term volunteer and lifetime supporter and member of OSAP. She has ceaselessly worked to support OSAP through social media (she’s a champion poster on the OSAP Facebook page) and frequently promotes OSAP’s activities and events to her other networks including the dental public health and dental hygiene communities.
