Being involved in clinical activities did not increase risk of COVID-19, study says

During the pandemic, the majority of dental professionals had to cease their dental activities in order to slow down the spread of COVID-19. The rationale behind the decision was the belief that dental professionals were at an increased risk of contracting SARS-CoV-2 owing to aerosol generation during dental procedures, which increased the risk of infection. Antiviral treatments can help reduce the risk of serious illness and death from SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This is particularly true for those who aren’t fully vaccinated. In 2021, a clinical trial found that a combination of the antiviral drugs nirmatrelvir and ritonavir reduced the risk of severe COVID-19 by almost 90% for unvaccinated people. Rethinking Medicare’s “Medically Necessary” Dental Coverage

Since its inception in 1965, Medicare has provided essentially no coverage for dental care. In November 2022, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released Calendar Year 2023 Physician Fee Schedule final rules, which included a new guarantee to cover dental services “when that service is integral to treating a beneficiary’s medical condition.” While CMS has set some guidelines for what will be included in initial years, this nonspecific term also sets a precedent for expanding who is eligible and what care is covered in the future. XBB.1.5 is a sub-lineage of the SARS-CoV-2 lineage XBB, and is currently estimated to have a large growth advantage over previously circulating lineages in North America (139%) and Europe (137%), although these estimates are associated with significant uncertainty. There is a possibility that this variant could have an increasing effect on the number of COVID-19 cases in the EU/EEA, but not within the coming month as the variant is currently only present in the EU/EEA at very low levels. England set to eliminate hepatitis C – five years ahead of target

England is set to become one of the first countries in the world to eliminate hepatitis C, thanks to an NHS drive to identify people with the virus, and treat them using antiviral drugs. In the past five years, 70,000 people have been cured of the disease, which spreads through blood-to-blood contact and can cause liver cancer and liver failure. The NHS said it was on track to eliminate the virus in the community by 2025, five years ahead of a World Health Organisation target. Read more.

There is no such thing as “Herd Immunity” for COVID-19.  In this context it is a concept as antiquated as the “Earth is Flat”. The theory was based upon the work of William Farr in 1840 who proposed a bell-shaped curve which illustrated the body’s ability to mount a lasting response to an unchanging pathogen. Read more.
