Estimating the impact: How much does a measles outbreak cost?

A measles outbreak in Columbus, Ohio, that began in November had grown to 77 cases as of Dec. 15, according to the city’s public health department, with nearly 70% of the cases among children 1 to 5 years old. Twenty-nine of the cases had been hospitalized so far. Read more.

A new paper in Biology Methods & Protocols, published by Oxford University Press, investigates risk factors and protections against contracting COVID-19, and also for suffering from severe COVID. Researchers identified several characteristics – including male sex, lower age, blood group B, and larger household size – that increased the risk of infection and many other characteristics – including mask-wearing and using vitamin D – that decreased it.
